With winter upon us and subzero temperatures that make your cheeks feel like someone constantly slapping your face every time a breeze passes by, I had a craving for hot chocolate. Having heard the buzz about Cacao 70, I decided to give a friend a call and check it out.
We arrived slightly after 8 p.m. and found ourselves waiting in line, but only for a few minutes. I was quietly hoping that a seat away from the window and door would be available, but that would not be the case. We were seated where the cold breeze from outside could slap you on the back of the neck or send shivers down your spine as people came and went. I would have asked to be seated elsewhere or wait for another table to become available but I wanted my hot chocolate.
Once seated, it took us a while to decide what to order. At first, I was only thinking about ordering hot chocolate. That’s until I saw crepes, waffles, chocolate marshmallow pizzas, smoothies and shakes in addition to almost 30 types of hot chocolate on the menu. Our server was more than happy to answer the half a dozen questions we posed as she came to our table to take our order or as she passed by while we were trying to determine what to choose. After talking with my friend about my evenings in Paris walking in the Marais while snacking on a warm nutella crepe wrapped into a cone, I decided to order the nutella crepe with bananas along with the mango pineapple smoothie. My friend would order the apple crepe and tea.
When our order came, we were pleasantly surprised to see how large the crepes were. There were generous portions of fruit which made the crepe quite filling. The mango pineapple smoothie was also delicious. I did not finish my crepe and was struggling to do so when our server mentioned that they had containers so I could take it home. Done! I simply couldn’t bear waisting half a crepe and was delighted to hear I could take the rest home. I can’t wait to go back to try the hot chocolate and the chocolate hazelnut pizza!
If you’re looking for a cocoa fix, cacao 70 is definitely the place to try. They also serve grilled sandwiches, crepes and salads. While a bit loud at times, the seating is quite cozy allowing you to have a conversation with the person across the table from you without much effort.
